Marriage in China

In China, the parents have a very strong influence over their child's choice of a spouse. My teacher told me a friend of hers presented his girlfriend to his parents and his mother didn't like her so she asked her son to break up with her. When he refused she stopped eating. After 3 days of starvation she got what she wanted. Her son is now married with someone else. And the reason why the 1st girlfriend wasn't good enough? She came from another area of China...

Now you probably wonder why the children don't screw their parents... 1st, the parents control their children since the day there are born and don't let them be independent. Most of the parents don't have a lot of money and deprive themselves in order to give everything to their child. The children are called "little emperor" because they get everything they want. When you can have only 1 child you want to control him/her as much as you can I guess.

2nd, the weddings are so expensive the boys need to borrow money from their parents. Here is the very interesting part... when a girl meets a boy, she asks him if he has a car, how much money he earns and if he has a house. Then, when she presents her boyfriend to her parents, they ask him the same questions. The prices of the houses are very expensive so you'd better find someone who has one already ( + 3000 €/m2 for a salary of 400 € ).  If the boy is allowed to marry his girlfriend, he has to give money to his future family-in-law ( minimum 8000€, most of the time more...even double ). And then the poor guy has to pay the ceremony.

Now you understand why Chinese prefer more and more to have a girl than a boy and you understand why they work so much over time. Speaking about that...some companies give mattresses to their employees so they can work over time, then sleep at work and wake up at their desk in the morning. 2 years ago, a guy in his twenties worked over time every day until at least 2AM for a month until he died of exhaustion...and it's not the only case.
